Netanyahu Orders Hebron Sealed and a Possible West Bank Lockdown After Two Soldiers Are Killed

Two gunmen killed two Israeli soldiers and wounded three more at a checkpoint in Hebron before the IDF shot them dead, prompting Netanyahu to order a full siege of the city, float a closure of the entire West Bank, then scale that back to a cordon that could still extend further.

Two Israeli soldiers were killed and three more lightly wounded on 23 October when two gunmen opened fire on a military checkpoint in Hebron, in the southern West Bank. Israeli forces shot and killed both attackers at the scene. Within hours the IDF had imposed what it called a full siege on Hebron, and Prime Minister Netanyahu's office instructed security forces to cordon off the city and prepare to close the entire West Bank starting that same day.

Netanyahu scaled the order back later on Friday, saying he would consider a cordon around Hebron and the nearby town of Halhul that could still extend to other areas rather than sealing the whole territory. The gap between the first order and the walked-back version, a full closure announced and then narrowed within hours, is itself a measure of how fast the response moved and how uncertain its final shape still was by the end of the day.

By Friday afternoon Israeli forces had begun demolitions and forced evacuations in Hebron's Farsh al-Hawa neighborhood, near where the checkpoint attack took place. The demolitions started before any announced closure of the West Bank had been finalized, which means the most concrete action taken in response to the attack was already underway while the scope of the broader lockdown was still being decided.

The attack lands in a West Bank where friction has already been rising away from Hebron, with Israeli forces reporting dozens of arrests elsewhere in the territory and recent weeks marked by clashes between settlers and Palestinian farmers during the olive harvest. A checkpoint shooting that kills two soldiers forces a security response Israel cannot avoid, but the swing from full closure to cordon and back suggests the government itself has not settled on how far that response should reach.
