It is the fourth time in under a week he has put a horizon on it. On Saturday he called off a major offensive against Iranian energy sites after mediators assured him an agreement was imminent. On Monday he said it could be signed on Tuesday. On Tuesday he said Wednesday or Thursday. The American blockade of Iranian ports remains in place throughout. What is actually on the table is narrower than the language around it. The proposal is a temporary arrangement of 60 days granting safe passage through the Strait of Hormuz with no tolls, extendable if both sides agree. Ships would enter through a route Iran controls and leave through one Oman controls, which is a way of avoiding the question of who the strait belongs to rather than answering it. Tehran disputes even the shape of the process. Iran denies that direct talks with the United States have taken place and says the contact runs through Oman. The parliament speaker, Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, mocked the sequence on social media as theatre diplomacy on a loop, and said that leaning on bullying, broken promises and false claims as leverage is a strategy that has failed. Trump also pushed back on reporting that he was angry with Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth over depleted interceptor stocks, saying Hegseth has made tremendous improvements. That denial and the repeated deal forecasts are the same act of management.
