# When the Rain Fails, Wildflowers Move Apart Rather Than Together

Researchers at the Hebrew University have found that drought changes when Mediterranean wildflowers bloom, and that the direction of the change depends on when in the rainy season the water is withheld. The work, published in Ecology Letters, was carried out by doctoral students Barel Tsafon and Or Gross under Prof. Niv DeMalach of the Faculty of Agriculture.

The design is what gives the result its weight. Five species were grown across thousands of plants, both alone and in mixed communities, in a greenhouse experiment now entering its fifth year, with droughts imposed at the beginning, middle and end of the rainy season.

Autumn drought delayed flowering. Spring drought shortened it. A drought in the middle of winter produced no detectable effect at all, because each species draws on water at a different point in its growth. That null result is as informative as the others: it says the plants are not responding to dryness in general but to dryness at a specific moment.

The community finding is the one with consequences. Under water stress the species spread their flowering times further apart rather than converging, which reduces direct competition. In a region where the rainy season is expected to become less reliable, that is a mechanism worth knowing about before trying to predict which species persist.
